Around 1.5 million devotees have turned out for the annual Roman Catholic procession taking place in Manila. Each year, a centuries old wooden statue of Jesus Christ called "The Black Nazarene is paraded through the Philippine capital.
The dark wooden statue of the Black Nazarene believed to have been brought in from Mexico into the Philippines by missionaries in 1606, survived a fire that destroyed the ship that carried it, as well as later earthquakes and the world war two bombings, making some think that it has miraculous powers.
About eighty percent of Filipinos are Catholics and many combine it with local superstitions.
