China Bans New Business Ventures By North Koreans

Image
China’s commerce ministry has banned North Korean nationals from setting up new businesses in the country, enforcing recent UN sanctions as Washington urges Beijing to do more to curb its ally’s nuclear ambitions. The ban, effective immediately, came as Pyongyang launched three short-range missiles on Saturday according to the US military, reviving tensions days after President Donald Trump said the isolated regime was starting to show Washington some “respect”. Beijing has been under pressure from Washington to rein in its neighbour, which relies heavily on the Asian giant for its economic survival, and the ban is the latest attempt by China to dispel US concerns over its close ties with Pyongyang. China, which is the recipient of some 90 percent of North Korea’s exports, earlier this month said it would suspend its imports of iron, lead and seafood from the country after halting its coal purchases in mid-February. Under the new measures, North Korean nationals will not be

OPC warns over eviction threat to Yoruba in Niger Delta

Image
Oodua People’s Congress, has called on leaders and stakeholders in the southern part of the country to caution the Niger Delta Agitators over its threat of eviction of the Yoruba people resident in the region. The OPC warned that the backlash of such move might not be palatable. The NDA was widely reported in the media earlier in the week to have threatened to evict the Yoruba from the Niger Delta region. Calling for caution over the threat, the OPC in a statement issued on Friday, said it “could deflate the robust relationship between the South-West and South-South.” In a statement by its National Coordinator, Otunba Gani Adams, the OPC said the threat issued by the NDA’s leader, John Duku, was the second of such in recent time, hence a call to southern leaders and stakeholders to caution the group.

Idi-Ogungun Customary Court, Agodi, Ibadan, on Wednesday dissolved the 15-year marriage between Nike Adenekan, a prophetess; and her pastor husband, Adekunle Adenekan, over an attempt to rape a church member. Nike filed a divorce suit before the court, seeking dissolution  of her marriage to Adenekan, on the grounds of telling lies, immoral acts  and threat to life. In his judgment, the court’s president, Mr. Mukaila Balogun, dissolved  the marriage and gave custody of the only child of the union to the petitioner. Balogun restrained the defendant from further attending the petitioner’s  church. He also ordered him to pay N3,500 as monthly allowance for  the maintenance of the child. Bride Shoots Groom Minutes After Wedding

A Tennessee bride was arrested hours after saying “I do” when authorities say she pointed a gun at her groom. Murfreesboro police Sgt. Kyle Evans told WTVF-TV on Monday that 25-year-old Kate Elizabeth Prichard was still in her wedding dress when she was arrested on an aggravated domestic assault charge. Evans says officers responded to a report of Prichard and her husband arguing at a Clarion Inn motel a few hours after they were married. Police say witnesses reported that Prichard pulled a 9 mm pistol out of her dress, pointed it at her husband’s head and pulled the trigger. The gun wasn’t loaded. Police say Prichard then loaded a round in the chamber and fired a shot in the air. It’s unclear if Prichard has an attorney.

Thugs invade Kogi Assembly, assault lawmakers

The Kogi State House of Assembly was on Tuesday invaded by hoodlums, who disrupted its plenary and beat up members. The Speaker of the House, Umar Imam, narrowly escaped when the hoodlums attacked the lawmakers. A member representing Igalamela-Odolu state constituency, Friday Sani, was however unlucky as the hoodlums beat him and inflicted serious injuries on him. Oluwatoyin Lawal (APC-Yagba West) narrowly escaped being hit by one of the big chairs hauled from the gallery into the chamber while some journalists covering the sitting were also attacked and beaten as they scampered for safety. Vehicles belonging to the lawmakers were also vandalised. The gate of the complex was locked against the speaker and this enabled the hoodlums to pelt his vehicles with stones and other objects. Imam expressed shock at the incident, saying the House did not see the attack coming. However, the speaker said he relaxed when policemen deployed to the House assured him that they were in

David Mark for president, posters flood Makurdi

Image
Former Senate President David Mark’s 2019 presidential campaign posters yesterday flooded Makurdi metropolis in Benue State. The posters and the banners, bearing the inscription of Mark to contest the next presidential election in the country were also flaunted at the secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) where members held congress yesterday. Mark was absent at the crowded meeting which sought to reunite members and keep them abreast of the party’s recent outing in Abuja after the Supreme Court’s victory. Our correspondent observed that some youths holding the posters were also chanting that Mark would be the man for the job in the next general election. But, the various speakers at the occasion did not comment on the development as they were unanimous in their decision to rejuvenate the party in the state for a possible take-over of government in 2019.
