The government said “marriages between people of the same sex are unacceptable in Tanzania as (they are) contrary to the customs, traditions and laws of the country”. Iraqi and Kurdish forces in fierce fight

Image
There have been fierce clashes between Kurdish and Iraqi troops north of Kirkuk city, days after the Iraqi army took control of disputed areas. A BBC correspondent at the scene said there had been rocket, artillery and machine-gun fire in Alton Kupri. The district is the last area in Kirkuk province still held by Kurdish Peshmerga fighters. Iraqi forces have this week taken over swathes of territory which had been held by the Kurds since 2014. Army and allied militia launched an operation which saw Kurdish forces pushed back into the officially recognised autonomous Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI). The oil-rich province of Kirkuk, which includes ethnically mixed Kirkuk city, is claimed by both the central government in Baghdad and the KRI.  Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi ordered military action after the Kurdish government held a referendum which overwhelmingly backed independence. Mr Abadi had declared the vote illegitimate. BBC

The Most Dangerous Time For A Child

Image
Over the past 25 years, the world has made significant progress in saving young children’s lives. The rate of child mortality fell 62 per cent from 1990–2016, with under-five deaths dropping from 12.7 million to 5.6 million. But this progress has not been universal.  A new report from UNICEF and its partners in the Inter-Agency Group for Child Mortality Estimation (IGME), Levels and Trends in Child Mortality: Report 2017, shows the full scope of child and newborn mortality across the world. In addition to global estimates for under-five, infant and newborn mortality, the report for the first time contains estimates on mortality among children aged 5-14. The data reveal that the rate of newborn deaths is not decreasing as quickly as that of children aged one to five. As a result, newborns account for a growing proportion of child deaths with each passing year. In 2016 alone, 7,000 newborn babies died every day. Newborn deaths made up 46 per cent of all child deaths, an increase

Coach Gernot Rohr warns against allowance problems in Russia

Image
Coach Gernot Rohr of Nigeria Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr has warned his players that their performances at next year’s World Cup will be affected if there is any repeat of protests over pay and bonuses. At the last finals in Brazil three years ago, the Super Eagles deliberately missed a training session in protest at the non-payment of a bonus for qualifying. That forced the country’s then sports minister to charter a private jet and fly to South America with nearly $4m in cash. Rohr said he is convinced that Nigeria can go beyond the last 16 for the first time by preparing well in advance. But he told reporters: “The issue of bonuses and allowances, which are the usual African problem we see during the World Cup, must be avoided. “Such issue will be bad for our preparation. I have told my officials and the federation president that all (such issues) be cleared before the start of the competition.”

Huawei Stands up to Apple, Samsung With New Mate 10 Smartphones

Image
Huawei The Shenzhen-based group’s new Mate 10 phone appears just weeks after Apple unveiled its top-of-the-line iPhone X, a timing choice many industry observers have read as a direct challenge to the California tech titan. Huawei has become a fixture in listings of the top three smartphone makers by worldwide unit sales in recent years, investing heavily in technology and design to vault beyond the low- and mid-range devices that still round out its range. Like rivals Apple and Samsung, it has built AI features directly into the processor at the heart of its latest phone, allowing the device to help users translate between languages, choose the most appropriate camera settings or take over busywork like organising files and photos. Ideally, AI can help shift such everyday tinkering into the background, saving people time and minimising annoyance. “This phone is designed for ultimate performance, that’s the most important thing,” Huawei consumer electronics chief Richard
