It’s Like a Coup’: Critics Lash Out After Ivanka Trump Gets West Wing Office and Security Clearance

Ivanka Trump
Critics are lashing out on Twitter after it was reported Monday that President Donald Trump‘s daughter Ivanka Trump was getting her own West Wing office, complete with a security clearance for classified information — but no official White House job.
Robert Reich, who served as former President Bill Clinton‘s secretary of labor, waded into the backlash early Tuesday morning, tweeting: “Ivanka into the White House? It’s like a coup, and the dictator’s family is moving into the palace as it prepares to the loot the country.”
Others cited Ivanka’s lack of political experience, potential conflicts of interest and involvement in building a Trump hotel in Azerbaijan that has been linked with corruption as reasons why she shouldn’t be given access to classified information.
Here are some of the tweets:
Several Twitter users were troubled by the potential for conflicts of interest related to Ivanka’s company. Despite placing her brand into a trust executed earlier this month, she retains ownership of her fashion and jewelry brand and will continue to receive payouts, Crain’s New York Business reported.
Others raised concerns about her lack of accountability given that she won’t have an official title, despite her expanding role in her father’s administration.
And Maggie Haberman, White House correspondent for the New York Times, reminded that Ivanka and her husband, Jared Kushner, now a senior adviser to President Trump, said early in the transition that they did not plan to seek security clearances.
